Some Kind of Heavenly Fire is Maria Lax’s first monograph. Inspired by her grandfather’s book she combines her own photography with family archive and newspaper cuttings to pass on the essence of the bewildering stories relayed to her throughout her youth. I’m from a small town in Northern Finland surrounded by a vast, sparsely populated wilderness. Most pass through the town on their way someplace else without ever knowing it was a hotspot for UFO sightings in the 1960’s. Unaware of this history myself, it wasn’t until I read my grandfather’s book that I learnt of the incredible stories of supernatural events, bravery and struggle “I’m from a small town in Northern Finland surrounded by a vast, sparsely populated wilderness. Maria Lax is a London-based photographer with a background in cinematography, which influences her photographic oeuvre highlighted with precise use of colour, and an amalgamation of fantasy and reality. In ‘Some Kind of Heavenly Fire’, her first monograph, she returns to her roots, a small town in Northern Finland which was initially a hotspot for UFO sightings in the 1960s. Lax, who only Some Kind of Heavenly Fire by Maria Lax is an investigation and artistic depiction of stories discovered in her grandfather’s book.
